More about My Water Comes from the
Rocky Mountains
My Water Comes from the Rocky Mountains is one of the children’s books in the Schoolyard Children’s Book Series of the Long Term Ecological Research Network, which receives funding from the National Science Foundation. The mission of the LTER Schoolyard book series is to “engage children and their families in learning about the earth’s ecosystems, both locally and internationally, through narratives that reflect the dynamic research being conducted at the National Science Foundation’s Long-Term Ecological Research Sites.”
The story of My Water Comes from the Rocky Mountains was sent to elementary school teachers in the Rocky Mountain States of
New Mexico
,
Colorado
,
Wyoming
,
Montana
,
Idaho
,
Kansas
, and
Utah
. The students then created original artwork featuring different aspects of
Rocky Mountains
and the water cycle for the book and this website.
My Water Comes from the Rocky Mountains is the second edition of the first book in the Schoolyard Children’s book series of the LTER program of the National Science Foundation. The first edition of the book, My Water Comes from the Mountains, was published in 2004 by Roberts Rinehart Publishers. The narrative of this first book is written for children of ages 8-11 and takes them on an illustrative journey from the snow high on the Continental Divide to water in their faucet tap, introducing them to the distinctive wildlife, ecosystems, and diverse uses of water in the Boulder Creek and St.Vrain Creek watersheds. Over 2,000 copies of the book were distributed to 54 elementary schools in the
Boulder
Valley
and St. Vrain Valley
School Districts
in May 2004. In Spring 2006, 36 MY H2O supplemental teachers guides and materials packs were distributed to local school districts and educational organizations.
The new edition is written for children throughout the
Rocky
Mountain
region. Support for the educational outreach in developing My Water Comes from the Rocky Mountains was provided by the Schoolyard Program of the Long-Term Ecological Research Program of the National Science Foundation.
