Niwot Ridge LTER Research/Employment Opportunities

Research Opportunities for Undergraduates

See also Employment Opportunities for Students below. There are three means by which undergraduates can formally participate in the Niwot Ridge LTER program:

  • Independent Research
    • University of Colorado course credit available
    • arrangements made with appropriate faculty sponsor
  • Honors Thesis
    • arrangements made with appropriate faculty sponsor
  • Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)
    • typically a few fellowships available per year through NSF
    • students conduct their own research at our site
    • arrangements made with appropriate faculty sponsor
    • awards typically announced in early April
    • Students may find more information about the REU program operated by the Dept. of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology here.

Research Opportunities for Graduates

We welcome both University of Colorado and non-CU graduate research projects into the Niwot Ridge LTER program. A few summer stipends are available to CU graduate students. Logistical support (e.g., in the form of transportaton, equipment use, data entry and processing) are available for graduate students. Potential CU graduate students should apply for admission to the university through normal channels. Non-CU graduate students are encouraged to contact an appropriate Niwot Ridge LTER researcher.

Employment Opportunities for Non-Students

These are available only on an infrequent basis and we average less than one new or replacement hire per year in this program. Nonetheless, all Niwot Ridge LTER scientists are persistent in their efforts to obtain additional funding for their programs. One might wish to contact an individual Niwot Ridge LTER scientist and/or send a vitae to Mark Williams (INSTAAR, CB 450, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO, 80309-0450) or contact him by electronic mail (markw@snobear.colorado.edu).

Employment Opportunities for Students

We welcome students with work-study support. University of Colorado student-hourly, part-time employment opportunities are common; contact prospective Niwot Ridge LTER scientists.
