Niwot Ridge LTER Snow Report for March 2001
Greetings! Spring is here, and in the Colorado Rockies that usually means lots of wet snow.
So far, this spring is trending in that vein, with C1 recieving 3.73 inches of snow water
equivalent this month.
So, our very slim snowpack until this month, is beginning to recover.
By my records, on 30 March 2001, the C1 snowpack was 74% of average, with
a water equivalent of 10.0 inches in 39.9 inches of snow depth. This is an increase
from 65% last month.
By the NRCS records, C1 snowpack has increased 13% over last month, but is at 70% right now.
They also show that the South Platte drainage is no longer in last place in the state for snowpack
accumulation, a position it has held all winter. This distinction now
belongs to the Laramie/North Platte basins which have 79% of average. The South platte
is at 83% today. The top ranking basin is
still the Upper Rio Grande, with 108%, up just a touch from last month's 107%.
So, the jet stream finally shifted to a steady northwest flow pattern over us, resulting
in fairly steady moisture deposition now in contrast to most of the winter when the
storms dodged us to the south. This has increased the northern Colorado
basin snowpacks somewhat, but the same general pattern of this winter is still true. The
southwest is at or above normal, and snowpack levels decline to the northeast through the state.

Now we shall see if April will continue this increase. If you remember last year, April was
abnormally dry, resulting in an earlier spring melt, and subsequently a longer summer season
which was dry, too.

Following is the historical record.

Cheers!
Mark
