Aquatic Systems in Winter
Readings LC Chapter 5
Lesson points
  • What key abiotic factors control biotic processes in lakes?  What is the state of these in winter - see next questions.
  • What is the typical seasonal cycle in the vertical structure of these factors for seasonally-cold, mid- and high latitude lakes?
    • What are the mechanics behind these seasonal changes? --
    • For example, how does the density of liquid water vary with temperature?  And how does this play a role in the changing vertical structure of lakes from Fall to Winter to Spring?
  • Are winter frozen-over lakes in the Colorado Rockies biologically active?
    • If so, what processes are occurring under the ice?  And with what vertical structure?
  • What is the general composition of wintertime biotic communities in such a lake and its sediments?
  • Is there evidence of biotic seasonal succession in wintertime observations?
