  • The Field & Lab Practical ...
    • is 30% of the grade.
    • is closed book. 
    • will consist of 15-25 stations in the field and lab.  Each station will have multipart questions.
    • questions will be short answer/short essay (that is, requiring one to several sentences).
    • be sure to bring snowshoes and cold weather gear, needed for the field component of the exam.
      • forecast (as of 3/4/09): Saturday: A 40 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 29.

      • The only material that may be directly taken from the readings is re Plant Physiology on -
        • Plant hardening -- key aspects = WEH, p. 165-168 (if you're looking for more explanation, LC p. 43-56)

    • Review the "Lessons" for each day's topic
      • Physical Setting
      • Winter Climate & Snowpack
      • Winter Limnology
      • Winter Soil Biology
      • Winter Vegetation Ecology
      • Winter Ornithology
      • Winter Mammalian Ecology
    • Review the details that support these key points
      • For ecosystems & communities:  What key winter processes occur in these systems? and how do they contribute to the system's structure?
      • For organisms:  What are their key adaptations to winter? - and the mechanisms behind these adapations?

    • Need to know species id's?  yes and no:
      • You are not responsible for id'ing species presented as specimens in lab activities -
      • However, you are expected to know common/dominant species in the field (common name ok).
