TITLE. Lake-ice clearance and freeze-up in the Green Lakes Valley.

ABSTRACT. Records were based on intermittent observation of the extent of ice
cover on Silver Lake, Lake Albion, and Green Lakes 1-5, dependent on observers
present for other reasons. Dates of freeze-up and lake-ice clearance were
recorded, along with visual estimates of percent ice cover at various dates
prior to complete meltout in spring.

INVESTIGATOR. Nel Caine, INSTAAR, CB 450, University of Colorado, Boulder,
CO, 80309-0450, (303) 492-5053, cainen@colorado.edu.

VARIABLES. lake-ice clearance, lake-ice freeze-up, percent ice cover.

KEYWORDS. freeze-up, hydrology, lake-ice duration, meltout, spring melt, Meteorology and Climatology.

LOCATION. Study areas were Silver Lake, Lake Albion, Green Lakes 1-5.
Green1 40.0508, -105.6056 3431m
Green2 40.0494, -105.6108 3411m
Green3 40.0519, -105.6158 3436m
Green4 40.0553, -105.6203 3566m
Green5 40.0522, -105.6306 3625m
Albion 40.0464, -105.6036 3360m
Silver 40.0294, -105.5825 3141m
Original data are stored at Research Laboratory #1 (Room 213).

TIMING. begin 1981, ongoing, yearly (variable).

CITATIONS. none.

COMMENTS. Additional information, including percent ice cover at various
times in the spring, is available from the investigator. These data are
semi-quantitative and involve a great deal of interpolation and
subjectivity.
Notes:
1983	Albion	{melted some in late Oct. before refreezing}
1988	Albion	{ice cover was probably complete...}
1988	Green1	{...on Albion and Green Lakes 1-3...}
1988	Green2	{...shortly after the date indicated}
1993	Silver  {ice breakup before 20.05}
1994	Green5	{ice clear by 02.07?}
1996	Green3	{clear of ice on 23.05, refroze 30.05}
