The documentation section of this file was developed from the NWT LTER Data
Directory (Symphony files DDABSTRA.WR1, DDDOCUME.WR1, DDMASTER.WR1,
DDVARIAB.WR1; last updated 16 December 1991) by Susan Kindig and Rick
Ingersoll in early November 1992. Additional information for the
documentation section was supplied by Dale Toetz in 19 November 
1992 and 11 January 1993 mailings. Hard copies of data were included in the 11
January mailing and the raw data were manually entered using EasyEntry 
software on a PC, the resultant files were transferred to a Unix workstation, 
where the files were processed. The fields in the processed file 
(/data1/Datman/Dtoetz/Grlkchem/Archive/grlkchem) were separated by spaces.
These spaces were converted to commas before the data were appended to 
this file (/data1/Datman/Nwtdata/grlkchem.dt).[RCI 8 February 1993]
An error was discovered in the way the EasyEntry program was handling the 
chlorophyll-a average --- truncation was occurring as opposed to rounding.
The program was modified, an individual replicate was re-entered using 
Modify mode for all records that had chlorophyll-a concentration so that
the correct average was saved to the new data file. The resultant file
was reprocessed on culter in the same manner as described above. The
"old" data were deleted from the tail of this file and the "corrected"
data were appended.[RCI 24 February 1993] This file was put under sccs 
control on 30 March 1993. See the appropriate history file for additional

The previous data were suspect due to storage effects since the samples were not
analyzed at the MRS but in Oklahoma.  Furthermore, the 1992 values were determined
to be very high and their accruacy cannot be confirmed.  They may be OK, however is

TITLE. Green Lakes 3-5 water chemistry and algal biomass.

ABSTRACT. Temperature, algal biovolume, nutrient content and chlorophyll 
content of water flowing from the outlets of Green Lakes 4 and 5 were 
monitored.

COMMENTS. Grab samples were taken at the outlet of Green Lakes 3-5 at 
approximately weekly intervals during the field seasons of 1987-1992.
Not all lakes and parameters described were measured every year, but only
as available techniques and time allowed. All water samples were collected
in large acid-washed polypropylene bottles. In the laboratory, samples for
ammonia and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) were filtered through pre-
rinsed 0.6 um 934 HA Whatman glass fiber filters. All glassware used in 
filtration was either cleaned in potassium dichromate or combusted at 
450 degrees C for 2 hr. All anion and cation samples were stored at 5 
degrees C, except for ammonia and SRP samples, which were frozen at -5 
degrees C. Concentrated sulfuric acid was added to the former as a 
preservative. Cation concentrations (except ammonia) were determined using 
a Perkin Elmer Model 2280 AA flame atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS)
(APHA 1985). Alkalinity was determined by titration with 0.1 N HCl to an 
endpoint of pH 4.5 with a Mettler DL 21 Titrator using unfiltered samples.
Concentrations of other anions and silicate as SiO2 were determined using
an ion chromatograph (Dionex Model 2110 interfaced to a Spectra Physics 
4270 integrator). Litaor and Thurman (1988) report precision of estimates 
of alkalinity and measurements made with the ion chromatograph and AAS. 
Analyses for ammonia (NH3 + NH4) followed Solorzano (1969) while analyses 
for SRP used the molybdate blue technique following USEPA (1979) for 1988 
samples and Skougstad (1979) for 1989-1990 samples. Known volumes of water
were filtered through 0.45 um Millipore filters. Filters were folded and
stored in aluminum foil in coin envelopes in the dark over dessicant until
analyses. Chlorophyll (chl. a) was analyzed with a Turner Model 10   
fluorometer using 90% alkaline acetone for extraction with grinding  
(Wetzel and Likens 1979). The fluorometer was calibrated each year with 
known concentrations of chl. a (Sigma Chemical Company). Chlorophyll con-
centrations were corrected for storage, using an empirically derived algo-
rithm which related concentration change to storage time. Water temperature
was taken weekly between 1000 and 1200 hours MDT, using a hand-held 
thermometer. During 1990, pH and conductivity were measured in the laboratory
immediately after collection with a pH/conductivity meter (Model 24096, 
Lakewood Instruments). Trace concentrations were entered as 0. Commas are 
used as field delimiters.
