The original iteration of the documentation section of this file was
generated by Mikes Sannes, Melany Fisk, and Rick Ingersoll in January
1995. The data were appended and the file was put under sccs control
on 9 February 1995.[RCI 9 February 1995] After examination of the
data section by Melany Fisk, it was discovered that some of the
records for the 21 October 1994 incubation had been "lost" during
transfer of those data to culter. A complete data section was
generated and some erroneous data from earlier incubations were
converted to missing value indicators. Subsequently, the entire data
section was replaced with the more complete version on 20 February
1995.[RCI 20 February 1995] Investigator contact information was
updated on 23 May 1996.[MAH 23 May 1996] Investigator contact information

TITLE. Effects of added C, N, and water on N transformations in moist
meadow soil.
ABSTRACT. The effects of water, carbon (glucose), or nitrogen ((NH4)2SO4)
additions on N transformations and the chloroform-labile microbial N pool
were assessed in laboratory incubations of moist meadow soil collected
from the T1M trace gas study plot on Niwot Ridge. These incubations were
conducted at monthly intervals during the snow-free season of 1993, to
detect any seasonal changes in the microbial response to different
amendments. Soil respiration was measured concurrently; these data are

COMMENTS. Most of these data were manually entered using EasyEntry forms
and subsequently processed on culter, the NWT LTER workstation. Additional
detail with regard to the entry and processing of these data can be found

LTER Data on culter". Some data, however, were provided by Melany Fisk in

collected from the T1M tracegas plot, composited, and subsamples of
composited soil were incubated at 15 degrees Celsius in sealed Mason jars.
The center of the T1M plot is approximately 48.8 meters from the southwest
corner of the Saddle wind turbine on an approximately 254-degree bearing
(with E declination set at 12 degrees) from the Saddle wind turbine
centerline.
Carbon was added as 2 mg glucose-C per g dry weight soil (treatment
code=+++C). Nitrogen was added as 0.667 mg ((NH4)2SO4)-N per g dry soil
(treatment code=+++N). Water was added to bring the soil to field
capacity, i.e., 90% water content (treatment code=+W9O). For all but
the initial incubation (from 4 through 13 July 1993), water also was
added to bring the soil to 48% water content (treatment code=+W48).
Incubations with no amendments, i.e., incubated in field condition,
served as controls (treatment code=CONT). Treatments also were made in
combination so that there were treatments including carbon plus nitrogen
amendment (treatment code=+C+N), water addition to 90% water content
plus carbon amendment (treatment code=+W+C), and water addition to 90%
water content plus nitrogen amendment (treatment code=+W+N).
Measurements made at the initiation of the incubation (treatment code=
TIME0) were used to calculate net N mineralization (difference between
final and TIME0 inorganic N) and net nitrification (difference between
final and TIME0 NO3-N concentrations).
No correction factor (Kn) has been applied to the chloroform-labile
microbial N pool.
