TITLE. Effect of krummholz establishment on soil previously occupied
by tundra: root ingrowth and nitrogen properties of short-term and
seasonal water inputs.
ABSTRACT. Previous work has shown that passage of Englemann spruce
(Picea Englemanii) and subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa) tree islands
across tundra lowers the soil carbon and nitrogen storage capacity of
the top 15cm of soil (A horizon) (Pauker and Seastedt 1996). The
presence of tree islands (krummholz) on the tundra acts as a
'snowfence' causing snow to drift within the krummholz and in a
semi-circular area leeward of the krummholz. This drifting causes
soil within and leeward of the krummholz to have a much deeper, more
consistent and longer lasting snow-cover than the adjacent tundra
soils. The snowdrifts form a permanent cover over the leeward and
krummholz sites from November through June, helping to insulate the
soils beneath from the extreme low temperatures and supplying
significantly more meltwater in the spring. In contrast, high winds
cause the adjacent tundra to be free from snow and exposed to extremely
cold temperatures for much of the winter. Studies have shown that
atmospheric nitrogen deposition accumulates on snowpacks throughout the
winter months and that this is released as a 'pulse' of nitrogen ions
at snowmelt (Williams et al. 1996). We hypothesized that accumulation
of snowpacks in krummholz and leeward sites may alter nitrogen
dynamics in these areas relative to tundra, by either (a) affecting
microbial activity via its insulating effect or (b) accumulating large
amounts of atmospherically deposited N and releasing it as a pulse at
snowmelt. This study sought to examine the nitrogen inputs into tundra,
krummholz, and leeward soils over an entire winter season (using
buried ion exchange resin bags which collect ions percolating down at
snowmelt and early spring rains) and over a short period in spring,
immediately following snowmelt (using microlysimeters to collect soil
water over a 24 hour period). Belowground NPP (determined from root
ingrowth cores) and d13C values of tundra and krummholz vegetation are
also presented in this file. NH4+ and NO3- concentrations of soil
water collected over 24 hours (from microlysimeters) were not
significantly different at krummholz and tundra sites. In contrast,
inputs of NO3- and NH4+ over the entire winter season were affected by
site. The amount of NH4+ collected from tundra soils was significantly
lower than from krummholz soils but was not significantly lower than
that from leeward soils. In contrast, the amount of NO3- from tundra
soils was lower than both krummholz and leeward (although this was not
quite statistically significant, p= 0.09). To summarize, consistently
(although not significantly) greater winter inputs of NO3- were found
in areas with the greatest snow accumulation (i.e. krummholz and
leeward sites) but this was not the case for NH4+ inputs. Williams et
al (1996) suggest that NH4+ released from snow may be immobilized in
underlying soils and this might explain why high levels of NH4+ were
not detected at leeward sites. However, in order to fully understand
the mechanisms that determine the relative winter N inputs at these
sites, all the N fluxes (including N inputs in snow and meltwater and
microbial activity) must be investigated. Belowground NPP was
significantly lower in krummholz sites than tundra sites. This is
consistent with much of the literature in which turnover of fine roots
in grassland ecosystems greatly exceeds that of forests. The d13C
value of stems of conifers was significantly less negative than that of
all other vegetative material collected, indicating less discrimination
of heavy isotopes in the stem than in other tissues and in tundra
vegetation.

LOCATION. Study sites were randomly selected subalpine fir and
Engelmann spruce tree islands in dry meadows on Niwot Ridge. The study
area encompassed the north and south facing slopes of a saddle east of
the tundra lab on Niwot Ridge. The elevation of the study site was
approximately 3600 m. Samples and original data are stored in Research
Laboratory #1 (Room 178a) at INSTAAR.
TIMING. resin bags were buried in the field in between 5-11 September
1996, root ingrowth cores were buried in the field between 12 September
and 8 October 1996 and microlysimeters were inserted between 9 September
and 8 October 1996. Resin bags and samples from microlysimeters were
collected from the field 26 June 1997. Root ingrowth cores were collected
on 20 August 1997.

COMMENTS. Data were provided via via floppy diskettes by Gina
Adams. Samples were collected at Niwot Ridge, an area of tundra
above the treeline with minimal snow cover soil described by Burns
(1980) as follows: The soil is composed of Pergelic Cryumbrept of a
loamy-skeletal, mixed type, probably eolian in origin with moderately
thick, fine-textured A horizons overlying a cambic B horizon. Where A
horizons are not thick enough to be classified as umbric epipedon, soil
is classified as Dystric Pergelic Cryochrept of a coarse-loamy, mixed
type. These latter characteristics described the soil on the windward
side of tree islands, which was confirmed by Holtmeier et. al. (1992).
Less than 15% rock cover occurs on the ground surface, although extremely
rocky areas found in this soil type are have been interpreted to be
edges of buried patterned ground, suggesting extensive permafrost in
the past. Vegetational communities dominating this dry meadow area are
primarily Association Selaginello-Kobresietum myosuroidis, and Association
Caricetum elynoidis with some areas of Acomastylis rossii (Burns
1980). Pocket gopher (Thomomys talpoides) disturbance occurs regularly in
the Acomastylis (Thorn 1982), leaving esker-like mounds of soil on
the surface. Krummholz tree islands of Englemann Spruce and sub-alpine
fir are dotted across the tundra. Various forbs and willows (Salix
brachycarpa) tend to invade the wind-sheltered leeward side of tree
islands, and are eventually either killed by the advancing tree, or
become mixed with the branches of the island (Marr 1977).
The tree islands used for this study were a random sample from a larger
group that met the following criteria: - they were large enough to
have affected the soil for many years (at least 5m long) - they were
not located on the most rocky soils (fell-field) - there was a patch of
undisturbed tundra (dry meadow, dominated by Kobresia mysuroides)
within 5m of the krummholz edge. Ten Spruce and ten fir tree islands
were selected. Resin bags were place in soils at krummholz sites (at
least 50cm inside the krummholz, towards the windward end of the tree
island (i.e. the location that had been forested for the greatest
length of time), leeward sites (< 1m leeward of the krummholz) and
tundra sites (less than 5m upslope or downslope of the tree islands).
Root ingrowth cores and microlysimeters were place in krummholz and
tundra sites.
Resin bags were made from nylon hose. Two pouches were made per bag
(in case one got damaged) and each pouch was filled with 15 ml ion
exchange resin (Purolite NWR 37 mixed bed ion exchange resin, Purolite
Company, A division of Bio-tech Corporation Bala Cynwyd, PA). The
resin bags were laid flat 10 cm beneath the soil surface and each
covered a surface area of 30 cm2. The resin bags were collected
immediately after snow had melted and were stored frozen prior to
extraction. All extractions were performed within 14 days of
collecting the resin bags. Ions were extracted from the resin bags in
100ml of 2M KCl (Binkley and Matson 1993). Analysis of NH4+ and NO3-
concentrations in the KCl extracts was performed colorimetrically at
the Colorado University Mountain Research Station Kiowa lab.
(Note: The blank ammonium levels in the resin were very high, since the cation
exchange site on the resins contained an amide group. All calculations
were blank corrected by extracting the same volume of blank resin in
KCl).
Root ingrowth cores were made by removing a 15cm deep core of
original soil (using 3.6 cm diameter PVC pipes) and back filling with
tundra soil that had been dried and sieved through a 2mm mesh. As the
soil was backfilled it was mixed with water to prevent it being
hydrophobic. A collar made of 2mm mesh was placed around the top of
each core with 3cm below, and 2cm above, the soil surface. After a
complete growing season the root ingrowth core was removed with a
copper tube of 8.5 cm2 area. The roots were collected by wet sieving
through a 2mm sieve and were dried to a constant mass. Samples were
collected from the microlysimeters over a 24 hour period soon after
snowmelt. Samples were collected in vacuum tubes and frozen prior to
analysis of NH4+ and NO3- concentrations. These concentrations were
determined colorimetrically at the Colorado University Mountain
Research Laboratory. Vegetation for analysis of d13C was oven dried and
ground, prior to determination of d13C with a VG Isochrom Mass spec at
NREL, CSU.
Sample identification codes are comprised of 6 characters. The first
three characters denote the id of the tree island (e.g. T01, K04,
844). The codes used to identify tree islands do not provide any other
information about the tree. All codes were assigned to tress in
previous experiments. The next two characters refer either (a) the
type of vegetation sampled for d13C analysis (tv = tundra veg, ln =
living needles, dn = dead needles, ls = living stem and dl =
decomposing litter) or (b) the location of the resin bag, root ingrowth
core or microlysimeter (K1 = krummholz sites, L1 = leeward sites and T1
= tundra sites). The final (6th) character provides information about
the tree species. F = subalpine fir, S = Engleman Spruce. Columns 16 and
17 in the data section contain data for the concentration of NH4+ and
NO3- converted to area. Total analyte in solution(mg)=
(mg/L of analyte)*(0.100L). The surface area of the resin bag was
then used to calculate the input per area. (Total analyte in solution
(mg))/0.003 m2.
