TITLE. Martinelli slope 1:500 integrated terrain unit map (ITUM).
ABSTRACT. A 300 x 600 m integrated terrain unit map (ITUM) was produced at
1:500 scale inside the 350 x 650 m Martinelli grid, and the 1:500 digital
elevation model (DEM). Vegetation was mapped using Komarkova's (1979)
classification system (Braun-Blanquet) units. All map units were mapped
to 1/8-inch minimum map-polygon-size resolution. The map is part of the
Martinelli grid geographic information system (GIS). Many GIS projects use
an approach in which existing mapped information is digitized into the GIS
database directly from the original sources. The maps may have different
map scale, map-unit resolutions, dates of data collection, and
classification systems. When these different sources are combined in a
GIS, artifacts may arise due to boundary mismatches and scale
incompatibility (Dangermond and Harnden 1990). Integrated geobotanical
mapping can minimize many of these problems. This method simultaneously
maps vegetation and other terrain features that are interpreted on a
common air-photo base (Everett et al. 1978, Walker et al. 1980). We use
the term geobotany in its traditional European sense to refer to the
study of plant communities and their relationships to geology, landforms,
and soils (Braun-Blanquet 1932). Terrain geomorphic boundaries are used to
guide the delineation on aerial photographs of most major vegetation
boundaries similiar to the landscape-guided vegetation mapping approach
developed in Europe (Zonneveld 1988) and the integrated terrain unit
mapping approach developed by the Environmental System Research Institute
in Redlands, CA (Dangermond and Harnden 1990). Additional information

COMMENTS. With the exception of the column containing the individual
polygon areas, all of these data were entered using an EasyEntry form.

Lestak provided an ASCII file containing the polygon identification
numbers and their respective areas on 8 April 1994 and these data were
joined to the other data on 11 April 1994. Lestak also provided a
total map area (=176676.813 m^2) at that time.
Mapping procedures followed the techniques used in the Joint
Facility for Regional Ecosystem Analysis (JFREA) Laboratory for the
Niwot Ridge Saddle ITUM. Mapping at the 1:500 scale requires an aerial
survey in order to obtain the low altitute photographs needed for this
fine-scale mapping. A black and white set of photographs 1:6000 were
flown on 8 September 1987. A color set of photographs at 1:24000 were
flown on 14 September 1987. All aerial photography was provided by
Merrick & Company, 10855 E. Bethany Dr., Aurora, CO, 80014,
(303) 751-0741. The 1:6000 set of color infrared (CIR) photos was blown
up to 1:500 scale. These photos were used to map the Saddle ITUM and
the Martinelli ITUM. The 8 September 1987 1:6000 scale B/W photos were
used to make the Martinelli orthophoto and digital terrain model (DEM).
Vexmap of Boulder made the orthophoto and the DEM of Martinelli. Vexmap
is no longer in the photogrammetry business. George Allen was the head
of the orthophotogrammetry and the DEM map projects. Allen is now at

(303) 330-4529.
The base of the wind generator in the Niwot Ridge Saddle was used as a
control point for the mapping. The base was surveyed using the DEM
(US Coast and Geodetic Survey 5328 benchmark of 1951 @ 2777.32 m
elevation) and orthophoto the same time (July and August of 1964) that
the Kilburn grid was surveyed on the Saddle. At that time the base
elevation was believed to be 3521 m. It later was determined that the
DEM and orthophoto were incorrect. After Merrick surveyed the global
positioning systems (GPS) points and the Martinelli grid they discovered
that the DEM was incorrect by as much as 5 or 10 m (the extent of the
error increases from the SE to the NW). On 18 December 1992 Merrick
placed the grid points at their proper locations on the orthophoto using
GPS points on the Niwot Ridge Saddle and Martinelli slope. The UTM
coordinates, grid point numbers, and grid point elevations on the
orthophoto mylar copy were then corrected.
The orthophoto was the base map for the Martinelli ITUM, although it
could not be used for the mapping because it was black and white. CIR
photos were used for the actual mapping. A single large print,
generated from the 1:500 photo, was cut into 9 x 9-inch squares which
were then put into individual plastic sleeves. Polygons were used to
delineate distinct vegetation units prior to field mapping. The polygon
boundaries delineating the vegetation and surface form units were
revised during the field mapping exercise. Each map polygon was then
given a fractional code with the numerator containing the vegetation-
related information and the denominator containing the surface form
information. Donald (Skip) Walker and Leanne Lestak conducted the field
mapping from 8 July 1992 through 8 September 1992.
Once the field mapping was completed, data from the CIR photos were
transferred to the orthophoto base. The CIR photos were distorted, and
thus could not be used as a basemap. The orthophoto had been corrected
to represent the study area planimetrically. A sheet of frosted mylar
was overlaid on the orthophoto. Polygons and codes were then
transferred from the photos to the mylar overlay (15 October 1992 -
1 December 1993) and the map was digitized (6 December 1993 - 31
January 1994). The digitized map was then edited, plotted, and set up
for coding (2 February 1994 - 23 February 1994).
The map codes were then copied from the mylar overlay to coding sheets,
and data were manually entered from the latter EasyEntry form;
see "The Management of NWT LTER Data on the PC" for more detailed
information. The resultant files were processed and archived on culter
(NWT LTER workstation); see "The Management of NWT LTER Data on
culter" for more detailed information.
The data contained in this file subsequently were imported into
Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc's (ESRI) ARC/INFO
Geographic Information System (GIS) program and joined with the map
data. Color maps were generated in large format on a color electrostatic
plotter and in small format on a color thermal wax printer. Final copy
maps were to be dated May 1994.
The ITU-map had been initially digitized as a flat rectangle with map
units in digitizer inches. The orthophoto (i.e., the source map) was in
the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinate system. Map units
were m in the UTM system. After digitizing, it was necessary, therefore,
to transform the map (in inches) in order to make it compatible with
the UTM system of the source map, which was accomplished using 4 known
control points. These points had known UTM coordinates on the
orthophoto. Four of the outermost grid points, one inside each corner
of the map, were digitized as control "tick" marks with the attributes
listed in digitizer inches, followed by UTM meters:

The original registration tick marks that were used to register the
map during digitizing have the following attributes (digitizer inches

UTM coordinates for the original 4 registration tick marks were
unknown before transformation. The 4 registration tick marks were the
ticks used in the transformation process. Before transformation, the
input tick coordinates (i.e., inches) and the output tick coordinates
(i.e., UTM meters) had to be defined. Consequently, a "dummy"
transformation was performed using the known control ticks (101, 102,
103, and 104) in order to determine the coordinates of the registration
ticks (1, 2, 3, & 4). Before the final transformation was performed,
the "empty" UTM coverage was shifted -4,000,000 in the y (north/south)
direction. In ARC/INFO a single precision coverage can store up to 7
significant digits for a coordinate. The y coordinates have 7 digits
preceding the decimal point, although a higher precision than 1 m was
desired. Therefore, all y coordinates were shifted -4,000,000 m in
order to achieve the desired precision. The "inches coverage" was
subsequently tranformed into the UTM coverage. The identical process
was employed for the point coverage (point features in the study area)
and the arc coverage (line features in the study area). The ARC/INFO
transformation output for each coverage are listed immediately below:

The ITUM data can be used with the digital terrain model data and the
grid point data. All maps are in the the Universal Transverse Mercator
grid (UTM) coordinate system from the USGS.
On 17 September 1992, 3 high-resolution global positioning system (GPS)
points were surveyed on Niwot Ridge by Merrick & Company. Doyle
Abrahamson was in charge of the project and Ed Adams and Gray Jones
did the actual GPS field work. Points were established on the Niwot
Ridge Saddle, the Martinelli slope, and near the D-1 climatological
station. Each of the points was a third-order point with an accuracy
being 1:100,000, i.e., a maximum error of 1 m per 100,000 m. Additional
detail regarding this GPS survey can be found in the GPS folder in the
JFREA Laboratory (Room #177) in Research Laboratory #1.
Ancillary metadata for the high-resolution GPS survey for these 3 points
follow and include numbers, names, latitude/longitude coordinates, and
UTM coordinates. Peak and peak_az were used as reference points when
doing the GPS survey:

One-hundred and two (102) 50-m grid points were surveyed at the
Martinelli slope using the Niwot Ridge Saddle GPS point and the
Martinelli slope GPS point as triangulation points. Three photo
identification points were surveyed at the same time. These points
were used as control points to register the existing orthophoto
(done by Vexmap, in Boulder, which is now out of business) to the
new grid. The survey was done by Merrick during late September 1992.
Each grid point was marked by a stake driven in to ground level.
This is the actual UTM location of the point. Subsequently, a
brown carsonite stake was installed ~20 cm to the NE of the ground
level stake. The UTM coordinates of each point were written on the
carsonite stakes, although the erosive factors of sun, wind, and
snow have caused these to disappear from the stakes. It is
anticipated that a stamped metal tag will be installed on each
stake during the summer of 1994.

each of the 102 grid points, the 3 photo identification points,
and the elevation of the Saddle wind generator base, in addition

The Komarkova (1979) vegetation association units were used when
generating the ITUM. Komarkova's numbering system was used to code
the data in the GIS, although codes >63 were added by JFREA lab
personnel after 1979. Note that not all of these codes (listed
immediately below) occur in the ITUM.
