TITLE. Ranunculus adoneus: Mycorrhizal development.
ABSTRACT. Ranunculus adoneus plants were collected bi-weekly from Niwot
Ridge Saddle grid stake 34 during the 1990 and 1991 growing seasons.
Development of mycorrhizal and other fungi within plant roots was
quantified. Distinct patterns of mycorrhizal development were observed
and corresponded with phosporus accumulation in R. adoneus. This
accumulation occurred late in the growing season after seed set, when
plants were producing new tissues for the next year and appears to
allow the plants to bloom the next year when snowmelt begins.
INVESTIGATOR. Rene Mullen, EPOB, Campus Box 334, University of Colorado,
Boulder, CO, 80309-0334, (303) 492-6248, rbmullen@ucsub.colorado.edu.
VARIABLES. Glomus tenuis hyphae, fat (coarse endophyte) hyphae, arbuscules,
Glomus tenuis vesicles, fat (coarse endophyte) vesicles, brown hyphae,
blue-brown hyphae, blue staining hyphae.
KEYWORDS. Ranunculus adoneus, edaphic factors, mycorrhizae, plant production.
LOCATION. Study site was the Niwot Ridge Saddle. Original data are
with Renee Mullen.
TIMING. Begin 25 June 1990, end 3 October 1991, weekly to bi-weekly
during the field season.

COMMENTS. The metadata (file name=infmeta) and data (file name=91infect)
for 1991 were provided by Renee Mullen on 24 January 1995 via FTP. The
1990 data (file name=90infect) were provided in a 15 August 1995 email
message from Renee Mullen. These original source files are archived in
/data1/Datman/Rmullen/Mycorrhizae/Archive on culter, the NWT LTER
workstation.
According to a 30 June 1995 email message, Mullen was "fairly certain my
sites are each about 5 m to the south of [Saddle] grid marks 14 (site A)
and 16 (site B)."
Mycorrhizal fungi within R. adoneus roots were stained using a modified
version (as described in Mullen and Schmidt, 1993) of the procedure in
Phillips and Hayman (1970). Mycorrhizal fungi were quantified using the
method of McGonigle et al. (1990).
Data for edaphic and plant factors associated with mycorrhizal
development in Ranunculus adoneus can be found in
