TITLE. Seasonal plant phenology in nodal plots.
ABSTRACT. Phenological data were collected weekly for permanently
tagged plants located in 14 permanent plots (refered to as the nodal
plots) in the Niwot Ridge Saddle area. 12 of the plots represent the
6 plant communities or noda (two from each nodum) identified in the
Saddle (May 1973). The two remaing plots were located adjacent to two
temporary snowfences erected near Saddle grid stake 49. The plots were
1x10 m, and were further divided into 10, 1x1 m quadrats. Plant
species studied include Acomastylis rossii, Bistorta bistortoides
and Bistorta vivipara. Ten individuals of each species present in
a plot were randomly selected. Plants were tagged approximately two
inches behind each plant with an aluminum tag labelled with the
species abbreviation and plant number. Tagged plant locations were
determined using a Cartesian coordinate system with the outside corner
of quadrat 1 serving as the origin. These locations are on permanent
file at INSTAAR. Data collection began on 1 June, or as plots became
snow free, and continued until senescence. Missing tags were replaced
during the first week of data collection. Missing plants were replaced
by a new plant in immediate area and the new coordinates were recorded.

COMMENTS. Data for 1984-1989 and 1992 manually entered using an EasyEntry

Plots 2 and 11 are representative of the dry meadow. Plots 1 and
12 are representative of the dry fellfield. Plots 14 and 24 are
representative of the moist shrub tundra. Plots 3 and 10 are
representative of the moist meadow. Plots 16 and 19, are representative
of the snowbed, and plots 32 and 82 are associated with the snowfences
near Saddle grid stake 49.
There was no Bistorta vivipara in plots 1 and 12. Not all measurements
were made for all years, therefore empty columns may exist for different
parameters and different years and a record may not exist for every
plant for every year.
Tim Bardsley and Mike Hartman conducted a rudimentary survey of the
nodal (also known as the Ebert-May plots) on 7 September 1994. All
bearings reported below are for magnetic, not true, north; a declination of
11.5 degrees should be added to the former to convert to the latter.
The corner stakes of these plots had been retagged recently (summer of
1993?) by Diane Ebert-May. With the following exceptions the plot
locations corresponded to those in figure 1 of Halfpenny et al. (1983).
Plot 14 was found to be located southwest of Saddle grid stake 37, not 36.
Plot 82 was not listed in the figure, and therefore not located.
