The documentation section of this file was developed from the NWT
LTER Data Directory (Symphony files DDABSTRA.WR1, DDMASTER.WR1,
DDVARIAB.WR1; last updated 16 December 1991) by Susan Kindig and
Rick Ingersoll in early November 1992. Additional information for
the documentation section, as well as the header and data sections
were supplied by Melany Fisk on 8 December 1992. [RCI, 8 December

TITLE. Soil nitrogen transformations in 3 alpine plant communities.

ABSTRACT. Net nitrogen mineralization, nitrification, and microbial nitrogen 
were measured in dry, moist, and wet meadow plots in 3 different locations on 
Niwot Ridge: a south-facing slope in the Boulder watershed, across the Saddle,
and a north-facing slope.  Measurements were made on a monthly basis while 
soils were unfrozen and once over the period of frozen soil conditions.  
Associated soil measurements included moisture, temperature, organic N and C, 
total P, and texture.

COMMENTS. Net nitrogen mineralization was measured as the difference in KCl 
extractable NH4+NO3 for a soil core incubated in situ for approximately 30 
days, and NH4+NO3 for a soil core taken at the beginning of the incubation.
Part of this inorganic N was extracted from ion exchange resins incubated at 
the bottom of the core to catch leaching N. Column labels which refer to 
values taken at the beginning of the soil incubation are indicated with an 
i (initial) and those which refer to values taken at the completion of the 
incubation are indicated with a f (final). 1991 measurements were made only 
in the Saddle, in a transect of 15 plots across dry, moist, and wet meadows.
Replicates within each plot are referred to as A, B, and C. Measurements in 
1992 were expanded to include three sites, referred to as T1 (south-facing 
location), T2 (Saddle), and T3 (north-facing) in the sample column. Each 
site included dry (D), moist(M), and wet(W) meadow plots for which 5 
replicate samples were taken. Thus a sample called T1D1 refers to the first 
replicate of the dry meadow in site T1.
Samples were collected in and around the "trace gas" plots.
Tim Bardsley and Mike Hartman conducted a rudimentary survey of some of
the more heavily used NWT LTER research plots in 1994 in order to
reference the plots to established objects/points on Niwot Ridge.
A Silva Ranger compass was used with E declination set at 12 degrees;
the accuracy of the bearings is +/- 3 degrees. All distances were
measured across the ground surface (not at a fixed horizontal level);
such distances are accurate to +/- 2%. Each trace gas plot consisted 
of an area (with an undefined outer boundary) of comparatively 
heterogeneous composition (with respect to plant species composition, 
or plant community type). Bearings and distances were from fixed 
points of reference to the approximate center of the plots (i.e., the 
center of the bases within the plot). In some cases (T1D, T2D, T1M, 
T1W), bearings were taken from the approximate center of the plot to 
a fixed reference point, usually because the plots were not visible 
from the fixed reference point. In such cases, the reverse bearing 
was calculated and, for the sake of consistency, is listed below.
The original Bardsley/Hartman field notes contain crude diagrams
indicating the relative orientation of and distances between the 
bases within a plot; bases were generally within 4 m of the center
of the plot. This information is not reported here but these notes 
are on file with the NWT LTER data manager. The plot code, bearing
