The initial iteration of the documentation section was created by
Tom Davinroy on 4 October 1994. Additional comments and editorial
revisions were provided by Rick Ingersoll on 8 November 1994.
Additional comments provided in a 1 February 1995 email message
from Davinroy were incorporated into the documentation section
on 6 February 1995. Most of the comments section was written by
Ingersoll on 15 March 1995 and was based on his conversations
with Litaor, as well as his experience with archival of other Litaor
datasets. Comments provided by Nel Caine on 21 March 1995 were
used to edit and correct information in the comments and data
sections. The file was put under sccs control on 4 April 1995.
[RCI 4 April 1995] After examination of copies of the notes from
Litaor's field notebooks (now on file with the NWT LTER information
manager), it was apparent that WL1 and WL2 were the original sample
codes used for the Wetland zero-tension samplers and WLT2 was the
code used for the Wetland tension samplers. The general sample type
code, therefore, was corrected in the data section where necessary.

TITLE. Isotopic signatures of deuterium in natural waters in Green
Lakes Valley.
ABSTRACT. Isotopic signatures of deuterium and delta-18 ratios were
determined for surface flow, groundwater, and precipitation samples
collected from within the Green Lakes Valley in 1990. Surface water was
collected from lake inlets, lake outlets, and streams. Groundwater was
collected in zero-tension and tension samplers at several depths from
within several soil series and topographic situations.

COMMENTS. Groundwater sampling was initially conducted by Iggy Litaor.
Surface water samples were collected manually and/or with automatic
ISCO water samplers by Nel Caine.
Original data were provided as hard-copy laboratory data forms. A hard
copy of these forms is on file with the NWT LTER information manager.
Because of inconsistencies in the site-location sample codes and some
transcription errors for those codes between field and laboratory
analyses, Tom Davinroy met with Iggy Litaor nearly 3 years after the
data had been collected. Nevertheless, not all discrepancies could be
resolved. The original sample codes (developed by Iggy Litaor) are
presented in the final column. Although most of the "corrections" made
to the original sample codes in electronic form (i.e., in the data
section of this file) are detailed in the two documents listed below,
additional "corrections" were made by Rick Ingersoll in February and
March 1995. These are (sample collection date (mm/dd/yy), previous

These data were manually entered from the original hard-copy laboratory
forms using an EasyEntry form. The resultant file was manipulated in
order to correct erroneous sample codes and to create additional
columns from the original sample codes to facilitate statistical
analyses of the data. Detailed information on the entry and processing
of these data can be found in "The Management of NWT LTER Data on
the PC" and "The Management of NWT LTER Data on culter".
The resultant processed file was the source of the data in the data
section below; that file is archived in
/data1/Datman/Markw/Oxyiso/Archive/oxyiso90.dat.
Details regarding the locations and methods for collection of soil
interstitial waters (i.e., those from soil water samplers) can be
found in the citations above (all of which are on file with the NWT
LTER information manager).
General sample type codes were developed by Tom Davinroy in order to
analyze and evaluate these data. They are:
L (precipitation sample from simple funnel bulk deposition collector),
S (lake or stream surface water),
T (soil solution from tension sampler),
X (unknown or unconfirmed), or
Z (soil solution from zero-tension sampler).
General location codes were also developed by Davinroy and are:
AL (Litaor's soil solution sampling sites on the slopes to the east
and north of Lake Albion),
ALB (control section in the main stream channel about 50 m downstream
of the culvert under the road at the Albion camp),
ARIK (stream at terminus of Arikaree Glacier; location varied from the
channel at the lip of the cirque, where it is first exposed by snowmelt,
at the beginning of the season to the outlet from the pond at the foot
of the glacier),
GRL1 (plate weir where the stream emerges from the base of the Green
Lake 1 dam, i.e., after drainage through the dam),
GRL2 (Green Lake 2 outlet stream),
GRL3 (Green Lake 3 outlet stream),
GRL4 (outlet stream from Green Lake 4),
INL4 (inlet stream to Green Lake 4,
GRL5 (outlet stream from Green Lake 5),
INLET (the old parshall flume on the main channel inlet to Lake Albion),
MA (soil solution sampling sites at the Martinelli slope experimental
area),
MART (outlet channel 30 m below the road at the foot of the Martinelli
Basin),
NAV (flow gauging site at the lower end of Navajo meadow),
SPLW (Albion spillway site in the Green Lakes Valley),
STREAM (ephemeral streams within the Green Lakes Valley; exact location
unknown),
WL (wetland between Green Lakes 4 and 5), and
WLT (tension sampler sites at the wetland between Green Lakes 4 and 5).
Although it is known that the soil solution samples identified by
the general sample type code/general location code string of "T,MA"
on 06/26/90 were collected from tension samplers, there was some
question (after discussion with Litaor in February 1995) as to
whether or not tension had actually been applied to the samplers.
Unless the tension samplers were cracked it is unlikely that they
would have collected water without tension being applied, given the
nature of their construction (see Litaor 1985). Regardless, the
samples collected by the tension samplers during 1990 might be of
limited use due to the length of time that they had been set in the
field and the nature of their effects on plant root distribution in
all but very wet areas (e.g., the wetland or GRL4-5 site). Removal of
a few of the tension samplers in 1990 revealed that a solid mat of
roots completely surrounded the ceramic cup on these samplers to the
extent that there was virtually no mineral soil in contact with the
ceramic cup. It would be expected that the "soil" water collected by
these samplers would be unrepresentative of the typical soil water
in the immediate surrounding area, given the filtering effect of the
roots, as well as their "contaminating" (by root exudates) effects.
Specific sample type codes were also developed by Davinroy and were
described as "problematic and probably need to be reworked" by
Davinroy in a 1 February 1995 email message. These codes were
reworked by Ingersoll on 7 February and 15 March 1995. For the sake of
consistency, specific sample type codes as supplied by Davinroy were
exchanged for (or combined with) their specific location code
counterparts for some records. Codes for some samples (surface water
and precipitation samples) were reworked on March 1995 based on
comments provided by Nel Caine on 21 March 1995. Those comments are
on file with the NWT LTER information manager. The specific sample
type codes are:
PRE (precipitation samples captured by an above canopy funnel collector),
TFL (throughfall samples collected below vegetation, usually spruce),
LW (lake surface water),
SW (stream surface water),
AS1 through AS25 (samples collected by ISCO automatic sampler, and
soil horizon designations for soil solution samples (specifically
R, Oe, A/Oe, 2Bw, A/B, 2A1, LB, LA, AA, AB, Bw, A, and B).
Note: For all T general sample types that also have the MA general
location code: the first character in the specific sample type code
indicates whether the tension sampler is north of the plot (A=above)
or south of the plot (L=lower) and the second character is the horizon
designation. Thus, a specific sample type code of AA would refer to
the tension sampler located north of the plot in the A horizon.
For all Z general sample types that also have the MA general location
code (but excepting those that also have an A1 or A2 specific location
code): the soil horizon is designated A/B (i.e., near the A and B
horizon boundary). Based on this, the sample collected on 09/06/90
and corresponding to an original sample code of MA22BW, was given
a specific sample type code of A2. It is possible that the specific
sample and specific location codes of "A/Oe,A2" might be more
appropriate (than the "A/B,22" codes provided) for the sample
collected on 08/30/90 and corresponding to an original sample code
of MA2-2A/OE.
ISCO water sample dates are usually dates of sample removal from
the field. Actual sample retrieval then would have been at various
times (usually separated by 1-hr intervals) on some date prior to that.
Nel Caine suspected that the initial ISCO sample collected at ALB on
07/10/90 was around 1200 MST on 6 July 1990; samples were collected
at hourly intervals thereafter. Thus the AS2 and AS3 samples would
have been collected around 1300 and 1400 MST, respectively.
Nel Caine noted that the ISCO autosampler activator at ALB for
07/23/90 was reset on 19 July 1990 and "should not have tripped."
Nel Caine noted that the ISCO autosampler activator at GRL4 for
07/23/90 was "reset 0800 19 July", "should have triggered 20:00 MST
20 July 1990 then continued on 1 hr interval".
There is uncertainty as to the precise dates and sampling times for
ISCO samples for GRL4 for 08/09/90 and 08/16/90, although Nel Caine's
field notes indicate that "AS#21 taken at 09:30 10 August."
Nel Caine had the following comments for the 08/21/90 GRL4 ISCO
samples:
"Time [i.e., date] of sample removal? Is so #19 is probably 1/2 hr
earlier. Act[ivator] starts 1500 MST 17 Aug."
Nel Caine had the following comments for the 08/23/90 GRL4 ISCO
samples:
"Time of removal? Is so #17 may be 1/2 hr earlier."
The following comments were provided by Nel Caine on 21 March 1995:
"I assume all PRE samples [i.e., original sample codes indicating
a precipitation sample but with no A, B, OPEN, or CLOSED designation]
are from 'Open' [i.e., above canopy] collectors earlier in record. In
all cases, precip. samples should be identified as accumulated over
period from date of last collection to that shown here as sample
date, Except where other info. So GRL4-PRECP 08/30/90 represents
precip from 08/16/90 until then."
Based on these and other of Nel Caine's comments, a specific sample
type of PRE was assigned to all "B" and/or "OPE" original sample
codes, and a specific sample type of TFL was assigned to all "A"
and/or "CLO" original sample codes.
Although original sample codes for the wetland soil solution samples
do not suggest any corresponding soil horizons, related datasets and
notes on a map of the soil solution sampling sites (prepared by
Ingersoll as a field technician in 1989 and on file with the NWT LTER
information manager) indicate that only Oe horizons were sampled in
the wetland and, for that reason, Oe was used as the specific sample
type code for samples collected at that general location code. It is
possible that the soil solution sampling at the GRL4-5 general
location code also is restricted to the Oe horizon.
Specific location codes are provided where an additional code is
necessary to distinguish samples from the same general location, e.g.,
soil solution samples from the various specific locations within the
Green Lake 4 catena. For all MA sample types the specific location
code refers to the plot (A1, A2, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 21, 22, 23, 24,
25, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 51, 52, 53, 54, or 55) at
the Martinelli slope experimental area. A map depicting relative plot
locations can be found in Litaor (1987). Although there is no specific
location code listed for the sample corresponding to a sample
collection date of 06/19/90 and an original sample code of MA92Zt, the
specific location code must be either 12, 32, or 42. The lack of a
specific location code can mean that either (1) such information is
missing or (2) such information is not needed to further distinguish
samples (e.g., the soil solution samplers at Green Lake 3). Because
there is no evidence (elsewhere in this dataset or in other related
datasets) of more than a single soil solution sampling site at Green
Lake 3, no specific location code was used for the sample collected
on 09/20/90 and corresponding to an original sample code of
GRLZt14OE.
Initials of original investigator are either IL (Iggy Litaor) or NC
(Nel Caine).
Nel Caine noted that USGS isotope samples were also collected at the
ALB location on 06/07/90.
