Title:  Soil temperature data for Konza Prairie soil biodiversity and
decomposition studies.


Abstract:  Soil temperature was monitored at selected decomposition plots
of high and low biodiversity 
during the soil biodiversity project on the Konza Prairie (see associated
metadata). Soil temperature
recorders were placed 7 cm in the ground on both treatment and control plots at two sites of high and low 
biodiversity. The recorders were placed in the field in the spring of
year 2 when rainout shelters were 
placed over treatment plots and recorded soil temperature every hour.

Comments:  The soil temperature recorders used were Ryan Instruments waterproof RL100 temperature 
recorders. Recorders were buried so that the top of the recorder was beneath
7 cm of soil.  Recorders were 
placed at treatment and control plots at Decomposition plots 01(watershed 1D,
low biodiversity), 02 
(watershed 20 C, high biodiversity), 05 (watershed 1C, low biodiversity), and 06(watershed 20B, high 
biodiversity).  Breaks in date or time sequences are due to times of data
recovery and recorder deployment. 
We tried to deploy most recorders in the field but some were brought back to headquarters to be deployed. 
Recorders were set to delay start at a synchronous time after deployment except for recorders 01,02,and 04 
on July 15, 1999.  There is no data for treatment plot at decomposition plot 02 (recorder 03) due to trouble 
in the recovery procedures.
