Institutional support
Niwot Ridge Long-Term Ecological Research
The Niwot Ridge LTER project is an interdisciplinary study of the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in the sub-alpine and alpine environments of the Coloado Rocky Mountains. It is supported by the National Science Foundation. The Niwot Ridge LTER project was essential to the collection and analysis of the phytoplankton data presented on this web site and also hosts this web site.
National Science Fountation
NSF supported field research, sample processing, web site creation, and undergraduate education through a number of grants that span more than a decade. The grants include NWT-LTER science projects as well as Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU), and other activities.
Most recently this web project was supported by a NSF grant for the Niwot Ridge Long Term Ecological Research Program (DEB-0423662).
Math-Bio Program at CU-Boulder
The Math-Bio program was an 2003-2005 undergraduate internship program of the University of Colorado supported by the National Science Foundation through the Niwot Ridge LTER program (NWTLTER). Integrating the study of mathematical and biological concepts, students in the program participated in ongoing research projects and attended weekly lectures. The students gained valuable experience as part of a research team and learned to apply their mathmatical expertise to the natural world. The Math-bio program participants in this project included Amber Roche, and on a related project (Antarctic Freshwater Diatoms) M. Cox and S. Horn. Initial concepts developed during the Math-Bio program were crucial to the final design of the Rocky Mountain Lake Algae website.
Institute of Arctic & Alpine Research
INSTAAR, at the University of Colorado at Boulder, is the home institute for the scientists managing this web site.
The Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR) develops scientific knowledge of natural and anthropogenic physical and biogeochemical environmental processes at local, regional and global scales, and applies this knowledge to improve society's awareness and understanding of environmental change.
Image contributors
Many people contributed lake photos. They include Kurt Chowanski (INSTAAR), Daryl Reed (DBR Photography), Richard Youngdahl, Mike Amfahr (www.thespiritoftherockies.net) and others. All photographers are credited on individual webpages directly under their images. Thanks everyone!
