Description:

Cells are distinct looking, appearing to be almost square in shape and are usually dark brown. There is one flagella extending posterioly from the cell. Another is wrapped around the circumfrence of a cell, much like a ring around saturn. There is a distinct groove in the cell where this flagella rests.

Cells are solitary, mostly swimming by 2 flagella of approximately equal length and mostly lateral in attachment (apical in 1 family), 1 flagellum wound about the cell in a transverse furrow, and 1 extended posteriorly from the point of attachment in a longitudinal furrow; cells mostly dorsiventrally flattened and differentiated, the longitudinal furrow extending along the ventral surface; cell wall firm and simple.
