Rocky Mountain Algae

Loch Vale Watershed Research Project

Research, education, and outreach about alpine and subalpine ecosystems of the Loch Vale Watershed, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. Studies include distinguishing natural biological variability from human-caused disturbance, the role of climatic variabilty on alpine and subalpine processes. The project trains graduate students and shares its knowledge with with the public, scientific community, and air, water, and land managers.

Lake Environmental Data

Niwot Ridge LTER

The LTER program was established by the National Science Foundation (NSF) in order to conduct research on long-term ecological phenomena in an array of ecosystems within the United States. Niwot Ridge is an alpine tundra site, located approximately 35km west of Boulder, CO.

The U.S. Geological Survey is conducting research at the Loch Vale Watershed as part of its Water, Energy, Biogeochemical Budgets (WEBB) program

Diatom Databases

ANSP Algae Image Database

This database contains light micrograph images of diatom taxa from rivers throughout the USA. The images were made primarily by ANSP Patrick Center Phycology Section staff as part of their routine analysis of algal samples.

Antarctic Freshwater Diatoms

Browse more than 500 pages of images and information related to inland diatoms from the Antarctic continent and Subantarctic Islands.

Cal Academy Diatom Collection

The California Academy of Sciences holds one of the largest diatom collections in the world with over 50,000 samples and 125,000 microscope slides. At least 1,400 slides contain vouchers or types.

Cal Academy Hanna Database

The Hanna Database provides taxon, locality, and publication information for tens of thousands of samples from sites all over the world. The database also contains thousands of bibliographic references. It is portion of the California Academy of Sciences Diatom Collection.

Diatom Paleolimnology Data Cooperative

The DPDC is a database of diatom and associated ecological and paleolimnological data relevant to study of long-term trends in variables related to global change. It contains data from western hemisphere lakes, wetlands, or estuaries and includes regional surface-sample calibration sets, sediment cores, and other types of samples. It is supported by several groups including the Phycology Section, Patrick Center for Environmental Research and NOAA Paleoclimatology.

Diatoms of the United States

Diatom identification guide & ecological resource for water resource managers, ecologists, taxonomists, analysts, systematists, students, and the public. We aim to help you find accurate information about diatoms of the United States of America, even if you are just browsing.

European Diatom Database

The European Diatom Database (EDDI) is a web-based information system designed to enhance the application of diatom analysis to problems of surface water acidification, eutrophication and climate change.

Taxonomy & References

AlgaeBase

AlgaeBase is a database of information on algae that includes terrestrial, marine and freshwater organisms. At present, the data for the marine algae, particularly seaweeds, are the most complete.

AlgaeVision

Database intended to be used in conjunction with The Freshwater Algal Flora of the British Isles (2002; edited by DM John, BA Whitton and AJ Brook)

Index Nominum Algarum (INA)

The INA is a card file containing bibliographic references pertaining to algal taxonomy. It contains nearly 200,000 names of algae (in the broad sense) and is maintained by Paul Silva at the Herbarium of the University of California.

Index Nominum Genericorum (ING)

The ING attempts to bring all generic names of plants together in a single list to reveal homonymy between groups. In addition, ING includes bibliographic citations and information about the typification and nomenclatural status of generic names It is maintained by the U.S. National Herbarium, Department of Botany, Smithsonian Institution

International Phycological Society

The Society is dedicated to: The development of phycology; The distribution of phycological information; and, International cooperation among phycologists and phycological organizations. The Society organizes the International Phycological Congresses at 4-yearly intervals.

International Society for Diatom Research

The Society promotes all branches of diatom studies throughout the world, for the benefit and education of the public. The Society organizes a biennial conference and publishes the proceedings. It also publishes the results of diatom research in a journal entitled Diatom Research.

Introduction to Diatoms - University College London

Website overview created by the Micropalaeontology Unit at the University College London. The website is entitled Microfossil Image Recovery And Circulation for Learning and Education ("MIRACLE"). Its' goal is to help with identification of a range of microfossils: Calcareous Nannofossils, Conodonts, Diatoms, Foraminifera, Ostracods, Palynology, and Radiolaria.

J-NABS Journal of North Amercian Benthological Society

J-NABS publishes timely, high quality, peer-reviewed scientific research that promotes a better understanding and environmental stewardship of biological communities living on the bottom of steams, rivers, lakes, and wetlands. In keeping with the current interests of most NABS members, emphasis is on freshwater inland habitats. However, papers on estuarine and marine benthology that address common ecological processes and properties are also encouraged.

Journal of Phycology

A journal spanning research on phycology, published by The Phycological Society of America

Phycological Society of America

The Phycological Society of America promotes phycology (the study of algae) and fosters phycological research and education. Made up of scientists and practitioners from diverse backgrounds, the society has an international membership and welcomes anyone interested in phycology.  The society publishes the Journal of Phycology and the Phycological Newsletter. Annual meetings are held, often jointly with other national or international societies of mutual member interest. The society provides grants and fellowhships to graduate student members.
