Secondary Description:
Frustules are rectangular to lanceolate in girdle view, usually forming ribbon- or band-shaped colonies of cells joined by interlocking spines. A single labiate process is present, usually at a pole, and this is different from the two-per-valve conditions in the genus Synedra. Taxa are often abundant in eutrophic reservoirs and responds to dramatically elevated phosphorus.
