Cells have heterokont flagellation, one or two chloroplasts, one or more contractile vacuoles, and a stigma. The protoplast is housed in a cylidrical to funnel-shaped lorica made of interwoven cellulose microfibrils. Species are determined on a basis of lorica and colony morhphology.
